Spring Cabbages
« on: July 09, 2012, 22:00 »
Hello everybody

I'm very new to all this and i was wondering about spring cabbages.

do you need to buy a certain variety of cabbage to grow for the spring or will any cabbage be a spring cabbage if sowed at the correct time.

my plot has mainly been a building site and was going to sow some spring cabbages just to give something a go really

I've got some seeds called greyhound

any advice would be helpful thank you

you need a spring cabbage variety - they are winter hardy and come spring, they will not bolt to seed as soon as it starts to warm up.  That is providing we don't have a mild winter followed by a heatwave in early spring ... kind of mucked up things this year  ::)

There are lots of varieties available, the most common ones are April, Wheelers Imperial or Durham Early.

Most important tip - pigeons over winter descend on brassicas so make sure they are well netted and protected  ;)

Greyhound is an Autumn cabbage and it's too late to sow. Mine are well established now along with the red cabbage which will stay in over winter..
I forgot to sow the other winter cabbage (Tundra and Savoy) last month but I shall do that this week-end along with psb (purple sprouting broccoli) and fingers crossed it will be ok!
I sow my spring cabbage in late summer/autumn and I've found a smashing French one I grow every year...."Precoce de Louviers" which I get from Real Seeds.
So technically you can have cabbage all year round!!
Yum!
