A picket fence? 4.8 metre lengths of tanalised (sp?) gravel board can be bought for about 60 pence/metre, and cut to the height you require. These would be fixed to arris rail - under £4.00 for a 2.4 metre length.

A cheaper alternative would be to set wooden uprights into the ground and fix horizontal lengths - again gravel board could be used - to these. You can leave as small or large a gap between boards as you like and this type of fence can be two sided with planks fixed in a staggered fashion on both sides of the uprights. We have built the latter type here and its very effective against the wind.

is the fence doing a job like keeping pets off or people even do you need it to be over a certain height or is it cosmetic, for instance would  small chainlink fence do or do you prefere wood.
my neighbour did a picket style fence out of pallets and it looked quite smart and you only need to get some stain and a little bit of concrete for your posts :)
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

Talk to someone with some woodland and you might be able to get some logs, you do some cleft post and rail that would look nice.
Thanks
Kris
