Stock Cockerel ?

I was at Melton Mowbray cattle market on Tuesday and they were selling a stock cockerel, can someone please enlighten me to the term stock cockerel hubby thinks it means buy it or its in the pot, and I thought maybe it ment a young bird..... any one put me out of my miserey please

Interesting.  I would have thought they would call him a 'stud cockerel.'  Lucky boy sounds like he will have a good life!
