Hello everyone, I'm new to the site, hope you're all ok.

I'm hoping someone can answer a question for me please. I am a complete novice by the way!

Last year I planted some onion sets quite late in the season (too late!). With the lateness of the planting and the weather the bulbs themselves didn't really grow much bigger than when I planted them. So I just left them in the ground. They are all still alive with green tops this year.

If I just leave them will they continue to grow into big fat onions or should I plant new sets?

Hi Rob & welcome.  With regards to your onions, last year's bulbs will not produce a crop - instead, all their energy will go into flower production.  So yes, it would be better to plant new sets.

this reminds me acouple of years ago, i picked up 2 bags of onion sets in now de-funct focus at 5pence a  bag..it was about july time.. i planted them and had a useful crop of smallish but perfectly acceptable onions
