Leaf Curl?
« on: April 13, 2012, 18:31 »
Hi All.  My new dwarf nectarine is starting to leaf but I'm a bit concerned it may have leaf curl.  What do you think?

Only got it two weeks ago.  :(

If it has, is it too late to spray it?

Many thanks,

Mags  :)

I can't tell from your photo, but the RHS page might be of some use?

Thanks Yorkie. It does seem to be so.  Would have hoped they'd have sprayed them before sending them out... :(
I shall put up another photie anyway...

I personally haven't found anything that stops leaf curl. It comes in on wind and rain, and it's really hard to stop.

My peach trees get it every year but now I don't worry. Immediately give your trees a really good feeding of rich manure tea, or my favourite, fish fertilizer, and water in well. As the affected leaves fall off, collect and bin them, never compost them. With the feeding, you'll soon find new leaves sprouting out and good as new. Just be prepared for the tree to look quite bare at one point.

After reading on the squintynet, it appears to be very unlikely that my tree became infected in the two weeks since I've had it so what to do? Should I have some comeback with the supplier? I'm worried now that it may spread to the other trees I bought (apricot, cherry & apple). Too late to spray now so am gutted... :(

Not sure there's anything the supplier can do. If one tree has it, then it's likely all their soft fruit trees do.

But you almost never find it on apple trees or cherry trees. It's something that particularly loves nectarines and peaches. Not sure about apricots but I know a lot of research and development has been done on them so they might escape this problem.

Spoke to my supplier this week and they are refunding my purchase and said to chuck the tree in case it infects the others (also have an apricot which I bought at the same time) .....
Have had it for almost a month now and the apricot still looks ok so should I chuck it or just give it a good feed and water on the basis that the harm is done and I shall have to spray all my trees later in the year?

I just pinch the leaves off my peach tree (the infected ones) and take them home and put them in the dustbin, I fact you just reminded me I have some in my back pocket still from earlier today!
