I have my new ducks!!!
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:31 »
I am now the proud owner of 3 eight week old Khaki Campbells and they are gorgeous!!!

More questions, I am afraid:

1.  I had purchased a half sized bucket for their water but feel this may now be too big, what else can I use?

2  What should they be eating?  Was told layers pellets (chickens) but are they too young for these?

3.  What should I put the food in, is an ordinary chicken feeder ok?  Can they get their beaks in ok?

4.  Is there anything else I should be giving them, treats etc...?

5.  Is it ok to bed them on shavings and straw?

Sorry for all the questions yet again.

Will post some pics later for you to see!   :)

Hi Mollie Congratulations  :D

Answers :D

1. Anything that holds water, I have loads of things ranging from seed trays to trugs  :)

2. Really should be on duck grower feed at that age, saying that my 8 week olds mix with adults and eat their food even though I try and get them to eat the right stuff

3. Again anything, cheap plastic dog bowls are ideal as they are deep (also good for water, why didn't I put that above ::) )

4. dried meal worms, chopped toms, chopped up pear and apple are all enjoyed but don't over do them :D

5. The bedding sounds fine, mine just get shavings :D

Congratulations! Sure they will have settled in and be making a mess of everything in no time at all.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi, sorry to not been on sooner but I stayed with the ducks all day yesterday, couldnt stop looking at them, they are so cute!!

I will post pics up soon!

Thank you for all the responses so far.

One more question though, when can they have something big enough to swim in, they dont have many feathers yet, still quite fluffly?

At 8 weeks they should have mostly feathers and a little down on back and head, they may be younger if they have a lot of down :)

I use seed trays or anything shallow to begin with and stay with them :) Had they been in water previous to you getting them do you know? They may already be quite waterproof, but it's still best to start shallow and add more later :)
