Kailaan is pretty easy to grow - it's almost a poor man's version of broccoli (as in sprouts not calabrese size) and similar taste.  Yes, you can use whole plant as the sprouts are not really that big.  Kailaan isn't a big plant so you can sow several seeds, and try to stagger sowings a little so they don't all sprout at once.  They grow very quickly and quickly go to blossom during warm weather.

Fennel - why not buy fennel from the supermarket to find out rather than spend all that time growing it?

We grew Kale Kailaan last year, I chose it as an alternative to Pak Choi which can bolt easily. Even with the ridiculous weather last summer, it grew easily and we will grow it again. :)

Fennel is a strong flavour indeed. Try pan fried/roasted with olive and some plain baked fish.

Maybe, some bought in the shops in the spring will be more suggestive of the flavour.

You can eat all parts of the other broccoli too.

That's a good recommendation for them, though.
