I love Franchi seeds from Seeds of Italy and I see they have leek seeds on a 5m tape - http://www.seedsofitaly.com/product/595

After all my back breaking work dibbing and transplanting last year, this idea appeals to me but before I order I wondered if anyone had tried this method.  I assume you have to earth them up as they grow?  I have used taped seeds before, but it never occured to me it could work with leeks.

Any comments would be most appreciated.

I really don't find dibbing and transplanting hard work - I use an old spade handle as a dibber and it's marked for depth.

I'd actually find it harder blanching them in situ.

Hi ...whilst on the subject of leeks, I've got about a dozen lenghts of old dain pipes lying around, can these be cut up (rather than me taking them for recycling) and used to put around my leeks later on, save earthing up?

Was thinking originally keeping them for celery, but they're only approx 3"
dia, just thought might have some old soil pipe for the celery.

What sort of lenghts would they need to be cut into ?....6-8-10inch?

Thanks ..PAH

I find dibbing and transplanting leeks strangley satisfying, dont ask why but it does  :?

yeah but we aint all young and fit so any tricks to avoid bending, kneeling, lifting, hard labour, etc is good news

My old man kindly bought me a long handled bulb planter for Christmas as I have a bad hip and thought I'd be able to use it for planting spuds. Anyway I found it a fantastic tool for making leek holes.  You can always grow leeks in bog rolls then just drop the whole thing in

Nowt wrong with seed tapes though and if you think you;ll find them easier I'd go for it. You can earth up with a bit of homemade compo or even bought stuff, old growbag etc.

About 8" or 10" I think would be fine - as I said I drop mine into a hole but the show growers would have a heart attack at that :)

Make a dibber with a long handle and a tee bar and a foot pedal.
