Perennial veg bed
« on: July 06, 2013, 17:48 »
I have been planting a perennial fruit and veg bed and looking for some suggestions for a gap.

I have a soft fruit bed and on the veg side I have a small asparagus bed and also planted some sea kale and artichokes. There is a bit of space and looking for some suggestions. What would others put there? Its a bit shaded by a hedge along the west side of it.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

which artichokes have you planted - jerusalem or globe?

Rocket works as a perennial if you let it self seed, what about other herbs?

Maybe herbs as well, Kate. Also comfrey as well.

Perhaps a few flowers - Mrs G has been exasperated with sweet williams this year (although they take two years to get going)

Sorrel is a good one and copes well with a bit of shade.  It stops it running to seed so fast  :)

How about a clump of Welsh (everlasting) onions? Mine do well year after year without any attention and don't mind being in a bit of shade.

chives, mint in a bucket, bay.
Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be suspected of knowing nothing than opening it and proving it.

I've picked a few leaves to add to salad but not had enough to cook with it yet. I'd recommend buying the roots I couldn't get the seed to germinate.

I'm hoarding Creating a forest garden from the library at the moment there's lots of ideas forperennials there.

I'm very happy with my horseradish. A real treat every year. well worth a spot. Needs controlling a bit, but no more than mint.
