best sites for fig
« on: February 22, 2017, 11:10 »
Hi all,
Really want to grow a fig.
My main potential site is a south west facing fence, where it go in the ground in a paving slab lined pit. My concern is whether the site is sunny enough as the house shades it in the morning and trees mean it doesn't get full sun.

Alternatively, I could put it in a large planter at the front of the house against the wall, south facing. Would it be winter hardy in a pot and grow large enough to climb the wall a bit?

Any thoughts much appreciated!
Thanks!

It depends which fig tbh. Our is shaded in the morning during the Summer but is in sunshine then until mid evening. It fruits well.. planted in a  slab lined pit as you were thinking of.

As you don't live far from us I guess Brunswick (really large fruits) would suit, as well as the more usual Brown Turkey.

You can train fig trees as flat against the wall very easily.

It would be Ok in a pot as long as the pot didn't freeze. I'd choose the ground with restricted growth personally

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks for the reply
I was thinking Brown Turkey just because I thought it was the most hardy, but Brunswick sounds good as well.

Brown Turkey is good but it's fruits ripen later than Brunswick, and are much smaller, which is why we went for Brunswick. In an excellent Autumn or under some cover you could get a second crop ripen too. Responds well to pruning

Thanks, I will take a look at Brunswick. I guess what I want if I do go for the training on the fence option is the variety that would do best in partial shade.
