Raised planters
« on: February 22, 2017, 16:00 »
Last year we were given a couple of raised planters, around 1m square and about 250mm deep, part way through the growing season. They both have frames and covers, but we didn't use those, just filled them with multi purpose compost and tried growing carrots and various salads, most of which did OK, some less so.
The question is, what would you suggest I do with the contents for this year? Just top them up with the same? Mix in some manure or topsoil?  Thanks.

Are they standing on grass/soil or on concrete?

Hi, they're on a part of the garden covered in bark. But the container part isn't in contact with the ground; they are on legs, bringing them up to a nice working height.

I think this sort of container is great for salads and that kind of thing, especially if they are in the garden at home rather than in the Lotty some way away.   I've used this sort of thing at home myself.  I'd use it for some radishes and spring onions a couple of different lettuces and a cucumber or two.  I'd refresh the compost about 50% and use a bit of BFB or growmore during the season.  You could probably keep yourself adequately supplied with some of these crops throughout the season with a bit of industry and planning
