Trying to deceid about an eglu.  We are getting some hens in a couple of weeks and the kind person who is giving them to us is also lending us a hen house until we get our own...I am almost certain we will not stop at 4 so I think we would need to buy the "cube".  Are they easy to put together when they arrive?

Hi - I have had 2 Eglus - and run extensions and now have a Cube - see my website below and look under Categories on the right hand side then Chickens and Quail, and keep clicking to next page at the bottom - quite a lot of posts on my chickens.

When you first get the boxes for the Eglu or Cube you think 'Oh my gosh' (well you do if you are an woman of a certain age).  The Eglu and runs I put together myself.

The Cube I needed a hand with - not because it was difficult - but just because I needed someone to hold the 'other end' of bits whilst fitting it together.

The thing most find hardest funnily enough - are attaching the little plastic snap-it clips.  Not that they are difficult - but just fiddly and you get sore fingers if you have soft hands

I didn't get the run with my Cube - as i just have mine in their pen and they freerange all day in the garden.
Visit my website to see my chickens, quail, allotment and much more -

Definitely not me.

I also have, if you look at my blog in the Chicken and Quail section - wooden housing for quail, and a couple of little arks with runs which I use when the hens go broody.

The Cube happens to be better for me - with a bad back -  So at waist height it is so easy for me to clean out (once a week I just empty the plastic pull out trays at the back and line when with paper and a sprinkling of Aubiose and Stalosan - and hey presto job done - and a bag for the compost bins up my allotment.)

I love the wooden arks you see - but age and arthritis would prevent me from (a) lifting them and moving them and (b) from bending down cleaning them out and (c) treating them inside and out every year with a preservative to keep the red mite at bay.

30+ years ago I built my own hen house, laid a concrete run with sunken weldmesh fencing to keep the rats out - and had a flock of 40 birds.

Now with a flock of 10 bantams, and some quail - this is a very happy compromise, enabling to keep a little flock and be a happy bunny with my 'pets' in my old adage

Mind you - with all the free advertising I give the company, shares and a honorary directorship and a nice pension would not be refused

i think I'm going to treat myself to an Eglu  :D

Well why not  :D  Don't buy much in the way of clothes, run a titchy old car, don't smoke, grow all me own veg.

I run a B & B so it's my duty I reckon to provide new laid eggs to my guests. That's what I'm going to say to my old man who will go nuts when he sees my new pets

I have somewhere in mind to put them, an unused piece of my garden which has been under black sheet mulch for about 5 years til we got round to doing something with it. I reckon I'll grass it then put chooks on it - an Eglu but with a home-made run to give them more room. I'd let them free range but we have a new cat next door and get frequent visits from wild pheasants

That has to be the best marketing tool going.
Eat fresh laid eggs and you can feed the chooks too.

Go for it CQ  :)

:D  I'm getting broody for hens I think

Now my little JR is sitting on a heavenly cloud I thought it would be a good time to use the big, now empty garden for chooks. Seems strange not having it occupied  :(
