Fair play, the French beans in the large container were checked and were too wet but not the runners.

Picked some this evening and like you say they taste ok :-)

So it's a soil moisture meter and a change of regime next year.  Nothing more to be said about this now so no point prolonging this thread.  Unless anyone feels differently I will lock it.
