When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I've just read this in the online version of the newspaper. What a time ahead for the farmers as well.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

:( I saw the weather forecast this morning and did notice that the weatherman seemed to be emphasising the location of the jet stream and the likely summer we can now expect

It's something I mentioned on the forum not long ago, that I'd appreciate it if the forecasters would report the jetstream position as I think enough people understand what it is and its effects, to make the information useful.

I always take what the Daily Mail repotrts with a large pinch of salt.      If this summer is as bad as last year's there is little if anything we can do about it anyway.
Do you really need al that lettuce/

I too regard the weather forecast horror stories from the Mail with a degree of suspicion.

I tend to use Metcheck - their discussion page: http://www.metcheck.com/UK/ suggests that a spell of wet weather at this time of year is usual ( what they call a singularity - it happens most years ) and is part of the "European Monsoon" They are also highlighting that the models predict a possible spell of "phew wotta scorcha" weather next week.

Realistically I`d welcome a wet few days - I haven`t needed to water much apart from seeds and transplants and it`s not a chore I relish.

Will

I've read the tutorial and everything else and I'm more confused than before.  I thought I knew enough about the jet stream to get by but it appears I don't.  Now I am confused, befuddled, feel silly and am none the wiser about what sort summer we can expect anyway! .  Pah! It'll be fine!

Ah don't worry about it.  We're British, its our job to complain about the weather!

Anyway, last year we were lucky enough to spend almost all of August in Cornwall.  OH couldn't take that long off work so came with me and our son for the first week.  He is a weather 'Jonah' - it rained for a week.  He went home, the sun came out and pretty much stayed out for the next two and a half weeks.  He'd ring me from home, in Bristol so not that far away 'weatherwise', complaining about the rain and I'd be telling him how we'd been in the sea, on the beach, sat outside in the sun etc etc.  Whats that all about?

You got the only 2 weeks of decent weather in Cornwall last year :)... the Olympic fortnight as I remember.
We're famously mild down here, but not famously sunny and hot... in fact quite a lot wetter in Summer than the more continental South East, and more West Irish in climate.
Growing wise doesn't bother me so much in the medium term as I can adjust crops grown and how they are grown... a poly tunnel is on the list next year to augment the greenhouse. What does bother mehowever is the spiritual misery of overcast wet weather and it's effect on culture and life led.
The stream has slipped over recent years, but it might be temporary hopefully, and the Daily Mail know as much about anything as my cat.
