Seaweed extract - any good recommendations?
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:49 »
I'm aware advertising is not allowed, but is recommending a product? Apologies to mods in advance.

Some years ago I contacted a well known fertiliser supplier to ask how much seaweed was included in their product as it was not listed in the table of ingredients.

To their credit they admitted it was so low (one seaweed leaf in a batch) that it was not worth listing per se but they could state honestly on their bottles that seaweed had indeed been added.

So to my question: has anyone used any seaweed extract that really was full of seaweed? Has anyone used the real thing instead? Which was better?

Many thanks.

No problems with expressing a personal and honest opinion about a product you have used Kevin, as long as any negative review is not made with 'malicious intent', which yours clearly wasn't (especially as you haven't named it! )

Promoting a product you just happen to have a business interest in is of course rather naughty.  ::)  :nowink:

My Suttons 'Tomato Powerfood' packet claims that it includes seaweed extract, but doesn't say how much, although it does list the main and trace elements and seems to work just fine.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks, JayG.

The fact that the seaweed extract is not quantified makes me wonder as per my original post in this thread.

I'd have more confidence in a product that said x% of seaweed or similar.

As an aside, I already make my own fish emulsion but want to get away from this because the smell is upsetting other people.

I think that there are a few people on here who use seaweed from beaches (with permission)  and this guy also uses it

This might help on the legalities of taking seaweed, if that's what you were meaning: http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=86170.0

As for seaweed extract, I use a local garden centre's concoction, but haven't looked at the breakdown on the back. For the results I've had with it compared with my own ministrations, I think I will stick with drowned weed & comfrey tea.

There's always seaweed extract, but that smells as well - all the 'tea' mixes do,  some more than others, though.

I have used Maxicrop seaweed meal and found it good, in that everything grew well. It does have a lot of dried seaweed in it.

(I got this one as my Dad used to swear by it)
