hi hermon

Fleece?
Protects against birdies
Protects against pests
Protects against wind rock

Mesh? all of the above, plus
Lets the rain through
Lets more light through
Re-usable and washable

IMO mesh is a better investment, I have loads of fleece I don't use

Odd i thought fleece let light and water through pretty well. Fleece is more delicate but you can reuse it sometimes. You have to really secure whatever you use to have it be a good protection against insects.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Fleece though is very cheap bought in quantity compared to the mesh.I`m wondering whether mesh, fleece or clear polythene are best for over wintering autumn sown veg?
We use mesh for brassicas, carrots and parsnips allyear while they are growing. We also use them in spring when we start broard beans and peas,it protects them from wind rock, and remove when flowering starts. We have yards and yards of fleece which arrived early this year after the frost..now having polythene/fleece debate?

Polythene as in clear plastic would just rot the leaves, I'd think. There's no ventilation going on like you'd have in a polytunnel or greenhouse so you'd get a build up of moisture inside.

I use viromesh for peas, carrots and brassicas, also find it good for while transplants e.g. sweetcorn are getting established.
I use fleece for when I need to keep the frost off e.g fledgling potatoes, courgette plants.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
