got given some sunflower plants - any reason why the seeds cant become chook food? (eventually)

I think when they finish you leave the heads to dry in the greenhouse and then let them peck away as they please.

 I can't imagine they would be turned down

My chooks love sunflower seeds (with or without the shells).  Don't feed too many at a time as they are high in fat.  Too much fat is not good for us or for hens

The seeds tend to go mouldy if left in the seed heads so I rub them out when ripe and dry in shallow boxes.

I grow several hundred plants a year, for flowers, chicken food with the remainder left for the wild birds.

Left a huge sunflower head on my 6 yr old daughters plant last year to mature and gather seeds to plant this yr.  Weather turned awful, plant was forgotten about and eventually went black and distorted looked particularly unappetising but the wild birds had a feast.  Still finding empty husks around the garden.
