I found this on the web. That explains why squashes are slow compared to courgettes and why you should wait for the soil to warm up in the Spring.

Interesting, but no great surprises there.

How about maximum temperatures?  It is often said that lettuce will not germinate over 20 deg. C.  I experimented with this during my germination trials a few years ago, and discovered that my lettuces would germinate easily a few degrees higher.

That explains why my toms were slow to germinate! next year, I'll put them by my OH, she's full of hot air, that should do it!
