Have a read of that :D

what does it say aunty ?

Oh Shaun !  ::)

"True Potato Seed

True potato seed is produced in the berries that grow from potato flowers.

'TPS-true potato seed-is harvested from the berries that grow among the foliage of potato plants. An average plant produces dozens of berries, each of which contains hundreds of tiny seeds. Similar in appearance to tomato seed, TPS is usually sown in seedbeds three or four weeks prior to the potato planting season. The plants in the beds produce small tubers, sometimes called tuberlets, which farmers plant in the field much as they would conventional seed tubers.

This practice sidesteps much of the drudgery involved in handling heavy seed tubes, provides farmers with vigorous disease-free seed, and eliminates the need to store part of the previous year's crop for following year's planting. Many of the production problems that potato farmers experience result from the deterioration of the seed tubers they save for planting, storing them for eight to nine months in inadequate storage facilities."

wow this has started somthing. Deadly nightshade!! ?
I thik its Peru they always use the seed from the little berrys (small tomatoes) because the hills are steep. That way they carrie small seeds up the hill and plant them and carrie the heavy harvest down hill.
always have a target
and an objective.

The fact that you can't easily buy them might be a clue about how efficacious they are.

There has been an experiment going on on another forum, where they have saved the 'fruits' from potatoes, extracted the seed and have subsequently grown them on (with success).

Not sure if I am allowed to post the link to the thread but if a Mod/Admin says its ok I will be happy to.

I know someone who grew from seed last year....and a few of us on another gardening forum are trying this. My seeds from Desiree are in kitchen roll and a plastic bag as we speak - waiting for germination.

I also grow potatoes from seed potatoes, and from the tiny chits that I cut off of shop bought potatoes - these go into root trainers until there are roots coming out the bottom, they then get planted on and grown as per seed potatoes [earthing up etc].
