But, if you've got old manure already worked into the ground (which is good too) and you've no more for mulching, then straw will work well as a weed suppresant and conserve moisture. Just don't use hay which contains viable seeds and keep you busy weeding most of the summer. Come fall, the straw has broken down enough to be rotovated into the soil for tilth.
