Can Potato Haulms be composted safely?
« on: June 03, 2008, 09:39 »
Hi,

My Rocket Earlie's have now been in the ground 12 weeks and are flowering and I guess I will be harvesting them soon  :D

A fellow plotter said that the halums should not be put in the compost bin because of the risk of blight being in the halum and then spreading though the compost.

Is this correct? My Rockets are currently showing no sign of blight and look healthy.
Can I compost or not?

Blight spores will thrive on crop debris if and when they come around it does not need to be in growth potato plant, so can be harbouring later infection.

Only compost in a fast hot heap, same for tomatoes. If you can't build one, which is quite likely with earlies that won't be lifted at the same time, burn them.
