Goji Berry
« on: August 30, 2012, 12:18 »
I bought a goji berry 2 yr old bare root cutting earlier this year.

I potted it up into a tall 5" pot. It seemed to be doing well, but have noticed that it has only put about an inch and a half growth on from last years wood. I was not expecting it to be so slow growing...is this normal

I am not sure what is normal. I bought three from an online retailer, supposed to be a year old. They were very, very small and sickly looking - in fact one was more than sick - it was dead. (Most of my order from them was sick or dying). In fairness to the company (although I would never recommend its plants) their customer service was excellent. Their supplier sent me two new beautiful goji berries (and a hand written apology), which he said were two years old. I didn't really believe him that they were just a year older, but I have nursed one of the original, sickly looking plants and it has indeed grown tremendously and will be the size of the two replacements soon. So I think if they are healthy and given the right conditions they will grow a lot, but if your plant looks healthy I should think it will also be ok. Perhaps it has just taken it a while to 'settle', also, I am thinking if yours was a cutting it was probably very, very young so perhaps that would account for slower growth :)

Mine had three fruit last year (second year we had it) and then we chopped it right down and moved it onto the verge outside the plot -- no fruit this year

We had a couple,  a couple of years ago.

Grew like the clappers, had quite a few berries. It seeded itself around the garden and in next doors garden like weeds.

Tasted the berries, dug them up and disposed of them. Goji berries did not float the boat. Bleugh. :(

Still digging up the blooming things.

I've planted out two that were given to me. Luckily they're down the bottom of the garden and can spread out no worries.
Hopefully the chickens will eat the fallen fruit before it roots!
I shall wait till I get some fruit (maybe!) and if it's naff, rip them out!!!

Wow ......I hope mine dont grow that fast.

The plants seem healthy enough with a good amount of green leaves on....just not much growth. I will have to find plenty of space to plant out next year.

I have 2 in big pots, both stand about 6ft tall, and about 8ft in both directions.
This is my Allotment, There are many like it, but this one is mine. Without my Allotment I am nothing, without me, my Allotment is nothing
