A close inspection of my asparagus bed yesterday revealed:
asparagus spears - nil
baby creeping thistles - several
I think the hand fork is going to get an outing today....

The warm water of the Gulf Stream (actually the North Atlantic Drift), swirls around the top of the Shetlands and hits the East Coast right about where you are Ziggy.   The fact that you are about 10ft from the sea helps a lot too.

Checked mine this morning. The North Atlantic Drift has evidently not hit the coast of Loughborough.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, I had my first spear (in London) on 18th March, this is the earliest I have ever seen this. It has gone now though, frost damage.

Just been down the plot and given the bed a close inspection - great excitement - I've caught a glimpse of a great big fat pinky asparagus shoot about to break through the surface - the compost mulch has gone a little dry and crusty and the shoot has been trying to push a great big clod out of the way in order to see the sky.  Magic.   8)

I just hope that a second shoot has the same idea, then OH & I will be able to sample our first ever lottie grown asparagus spears together without a squabble over who gets to eat the tip!

Happens in our house all the time!

We've just bought some asparagus whatsits...the wife has persuaded me that we need a long term project as well as all the annuals...I guess she's right, but two years seems a helluva long time to wait for a nibble.
