Suitable for feeding chickens as treats?
« on: May 19, 2008, 18:58 »
I have a bag of broth mix sitting in my kitchen cupboard - is it suitable to feed to the chickens as a treat? Includes split lentils, dried peas, barley etc. Also I have a bag of porridge oats - are they suitable for chicken?

Many thanks - sorry to be so ignorant on what to feed them - although I have discovered that they seem to love grapes and snails!! :tongue2:

not exactly food but i give mine rotting logs an ocasionally dig them holes.

They love pulling rotting wood apart looking for creepy crawlies and going through the soil. Keeps them busy and interested for ages.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Mine go crazy for snails!!  I couldn't believe it - I moved a black bin bag of leaves aside and all three of them jumped in quicker than I could blink and started running around with huge snailshells on their beaks as they tried to get away from the other 2 who also had snails!

The funniest thing I ever saw was when we had 4 croissants left over from breakfast.  Remember, there's only 3 hens so when each one picked up a croissant and ran away with it and then noticed there was another one on the ground one would drop theirs and go for the other one.  Another hen would then notice the recently dropped one would drop hers in favour of the recently relinquished one!

This goes on for ages until they get tired or just manage to take their own croissants to a separate corner of the run and finish them in peace!

Our's love dried meal worms and white sunflower hearts and they love rice and pasta they run off with huge beaks full of the pasta and troff it as quickly as possible incase one of the others pinches it!
