Rocambole garlic
« on: September 12, 2006, 22:06 »
We consume a lot of garlic and I want to grow my own. I've heard that the best one for flavour is called Rocambole garlic. I haven't seen it in any catalogues..... can anyone please advise and where I can purchase? Thanks in advance.

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Isn't that the name for wild garlic? the garlic farm definately has that for sale this autumn but I'm slightly concerned by their description of wild garlic taking over to the point of you grow sick of it (also it's not a bulbing garlic as we know it, you mostly use it for its greens as far as I'm aware...)
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Rocambole garlic description

I don't know anything about it, just read that it's very excellent quality and truly garlicy so I'll love to grow it. I'd love to find a source so if anyone knows, would be greatly appreciated.

General description:

ROCAMBOLE
Sub-variety Ohioscorodon (hardneck)

This variety of garlic is the most popular of the hardneck garlics. It is considered to be Gourmet Garlic because of the rich garlic flavor. Rocambole garlic grow a hard stalk up the center which produces a bulbil or flower at the top. Rocamboles produce 6 - 11 large easy to peel cloves. The one disadvantage to these varieties is that the storage time is 4 - 6 months. If well grown and cured it is possible to store a little longer. These varieties grow better in northern climates. Due to their great flavor it would be well worth the effort to see how they would grow in your area.
