GARLIC
« on: November 30, 2014, 11:52 »
I planted garlic 5 weeks ago and still no signs of it so I dug a couple of cloves up this morning, they have no roots or shoots but are not nibbled or diseased. Do you think they will grow or should I be quick and plant some more?

were they supermarket cloves? They might have been sprayed with something to stop them sprouting....

Theirs usually grow ok. I think I'd leave them over winter and then, if they haven't grown get some Spring planting bulbs.

Gypsy, I planted six varieties about 5 weeks ago and some are up and some aren't.  Music is one which is nowhere to be seen, but I'm hoping they are just lying dormant until proper winter weather. Normally we would all be shivering by this time of year. Plants notice it too. For what its worth, I am letting mine do what it wants.

Hi Gypsy
Mine was the same last year it took an age to come up.

I even ordered some summer garlic as I thought it was dead.
Then after 8/10 weeks they came up and cropped well.
So my advice is to sit tight.

Some of mine are showing but not all of them. They do like a bit of cold weather which we haven't really had, but saying that I have put some in pots in the greenhouse as insurance, most of them are up but those that aren't have a lot of root growth .

Yes, some varieties need a cold snap to break dormancy.  I always find Music is one of the last garlic varieties to come up, depending on how cold the winter has been no earlier than mid-February but usually make an appearance by mid March.

They grow loads of roots before greenery... well sometimes they will grow greens and roots together but dont worry... I plant in modules every year and in Jan/feb I plant out in the plot..

The point, Gavin, was that they hadn't grown anything at all.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mmmmm - Sorry.... I must go to specsavers... thought it said they had roots and no greens...

Ok so in that case  maybe they are Spring planting type so they will still be dormant..
