I'm only a Newbie so hopefully someone else will be along to help.  In the meantime can you let us know how old your chicken is, has she been laying long, has she been wormed, is there any chance of a red mite infestation?

If she's a young chicken it could be she's just finding it a strain to lay at the moment.

I am not an expert myself and I'm sure someone more experienced than I will be along to advise you. 

From what I have read the red smears could be redmite.   You need to check the coop after dark as that is when they feed.  they hide in all the cracks and crevices and only come out after dark to feed on the hens.  They go back into hiding during the day.  You could try sliding a piece of white paper into all the cracks and crevices of your coop to see if  it comes out with read smears.  If it does then you have redmite.

hi, thank you both for your replies. My chickens have only been laying for about 3 weeks so are not very old, they have been wormed and i cant find any red mite but i guess i need to have a harder look. Thankyou again for advice
