Why do people not like ducks eggs?
« on: December 15, 2010, 15:56 »
Late this summer I invested in 3 just lovely Kaki Campbell ducks that were at point of lay. They are quite charming and give me 2 - 3 eggs a day. The eggs are now large and have the most fantastic yellow yokes. I put hem out with my hens eggs for the same price (£1 per half dozen) at my gate and Ohhhh...they do not sell. Why? They are bigger than a big hens egg, taste fantastic, the ducks are kept in near immaculate conditions with free range of a big field, plenty of extra greens if they want them, free access to fresh water every day, duck pellets etc. you get my drift. Just people do not buy them. Why why why?

Most people will never have tried them.......and prefer to stay with what they know they like.
For a squid, I'm surprised they are not trying them though ???

That is very cheap for ducks eggs so I'm very surprised as well. They are better for baking with than hens eggs  :)

You're right about baking they make the most wonderful cakes moist and quite dense, yum, however as my family are nearly grown and don't want to grow outwards much more I rarely bake these days just the occasional birthday cake or special occasion, sniff sniff.

I think it's like MoS said - people are afraid to try something new, plus duck eggs used to have a reputation for tasting strong or fishy.

You ought to do a bit of baking with some of the eggs and offer samples to show people what they are missing.

At a £1 per half dozen they are a bargain.  Wish someone around here did them for that price as I'd love to bake with duck eggs.

I've never been able to sell duck eggs.

When i used to sell hens eggs at the gate I would put a few duck eggs out in a bowl with a sign saying how good they were for baking and to take a couple free of charge and try them.  No one ever did. Not only could I not sell them I couldn't give them away either

That is such a shame.  People ought to put their preconceptions to one side and try something before making judgement on if they like it or not!  (It's a bit like when kids are adamant they don't like the taste of something but haven't actually tried it  ???)

I'm with AS.  I wish I could get duck eggs for that much little here, even thought about adding ducks to the flock of geese and hens just for the eggs, its something to consider.

I do love goose and duck eggs, it has to be said.  Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Duck eggs are richer and tastier than hens eggs and many people do not like tasty food.

To see how popular BLAND is look at the average supermarket loaf of bread and the dreadfull Mc Donalds.

If people do not buy them at £1 per half doz they must be quackers crackers. :)

Could you please tell me more........

Because, did anyone see HFW and the River Cottage Christmas special??

The girls baking the breads added eggs to some loafs (plus fruit I think), than just doing the normal 'flour, yeast and water' method.

Strange but never heard of anyone eating Turkey eggs.  Anyone ever tried them?

I used to be able to buy them in the market ....  actually I think there might have been some today but I didnt need eggs so didnt pay much attention.  They taste much like hens eggs, but are about twice the size of a std egg.

I love duck eggs, OH will always go for them in preference to hens, but brother in law is violently allergic to them!  One day I was picking them up from the local 'honesty shed' and an older local made absolutely sure I knew that they were duck eggs and that I was alright with them.  He was doing his best for me, heart absolutely in the right place but I felt about 16!   ::)
