Help with a bougainvillea please
« on: August 27, 2009, 13:10 »
I've just rescued a bourgainvillea from certain death from Homebase's 'Reduced' rack.  It looks quite healthy but the flowers are almost over.

I just love their colour but what do I do with it now?????

I have a big one on the wall of my unheated greenhouse.  It would make 20ft + in a year if I let it  The thorns are a nightmare, it is only saved from being dug out by its bracts being so lovely. It needs to be frost free rather than warm in the winter or i should say that is how mine is and it has survived 30years.  I sometimes use the bracts in flower arrangements and they last quite well.  Some years I cut it back so hard you think it would die but it seems to like it and the blooming thing comes back stronger than ever ::)

Under cold glass must be warm enough in your part of the world Spana..lucky you..I'm not really jealous  :D Wish i had somewhere t grow one :(
Don't think it would have survivied in my g/house last winter, even the endive had ice inside. Definitely not what you'd call frost free
It's one of those tricky things isn't it?
The one i grew on the house in Greece, was killed by the first frost in umpteen years while i was there :(...so definitely need to be frost free at least.

Bombers, another forum member was growing one in his conservatory wonderhow he got on?

Hello. Novice.
Mine's in a North facing conservatory, not heated but definately frost free during the winter months. I just keep it 'damp' during the winter, and increase watering in the early spring, feeding it once a week with general purpose plant food.

Hope the pictures work as I'm having some tecky problems with the PC... ::)

and

Sorry off topic...but if you are serious about moving to Greece look long and hard at health care before you go (cos the greek health service is absolute crepe) I lived on an Island and for anything 'not everyday' I would have had to get either boat or airlift to Athens for treatment. it cost me 260 euros, to get an allergy rash diagnosed and to pay for the meds. We moan about our NHS but miss it when we go somewhere else

Lovely country...I still miss it, but just something that needs to be considered apart from the sun and bougainvillea..oh mustn't forget (how could I ) 1.5Lt of decent wine for less than a euro :nowink:

That's the one :D very, very peaceful in the so called winter :) Some old boys still use donkeys for transport, and sheep that just wander everywhere with a shepherd.
flights only on 3 days a week out of season, and then only to Athens, so you can't get back in a hurry. Come to think of it you can't do anything in a hurry...EVER
