Apologies as I haven't actually purchased these yet but intend to after work today and will edit some reviews in later:
  B+Q - Verve Multipurpose Compost (125L) @ £5.98 (4.8p/l)
  B+Q - Verve John Innes No1: Seedlings & Cuttings (20L) @ £3.98 (20p/l)
Prices, quantities and shops purchased from are very helpful for finding quality bargains, thanks  ;)

I've always bought peat free organic compost and never had any trouble getting things growing (but like I said, I am a flower grower so happy to be advised otherwise in terms of getting veg seeds off to the best start).

I bought some organic peat free New Horizon last week and it's nice and crumbly although it is a bit woody also.
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

So far Westland Surestart seed and cutting compost - found this quite good last year.
Have bought a couple of bags of Westland well rotted farmyard manure.

We've had a real difficulty getting manure this year - seems to be a bit of shortage??
Maybe farmers can't afford the fertiliser this year and are having to use it themselves??

Levington f2s seed compost, Levington m2 and m3 potting compost. Not the cheapest but probably one of the very best and most consistent. No point skimping on the very stuff our plants grow into.

We use Humax, bought from our allotment site, 3 bags for £12.50, a bit dearer than most but well worth it, and sometimes we use and mix peat with it.

Yes I know thats a dirty word (peat) but horses for courses as they say.

The Humax is superb for sowing seeds in, use it at home as well.

The sun is shining at the moment, need lots more then can get on the lottie and start some serious work, to wet at the moment.

In jan I bought 3 bags of Verve peat-free.. (£10) - have opened one so far, it's not claggy like some batches in the past, very friable and pleasant to handle. Sieved a batch for seedlings, some thin twigs have gone through the riddle but otherwise very pleased with it.

B&Q Peat Free compost - a few months ago a lot of stock was quite wet with the rains we have been getting, but more recently a nice crumby composition and ok for seed sowing once the bigger bits have been riddled.

I'm going to take your advice on this as never bought this compost before. Particularly for my greenhouse toms. :)

I use Erin multipurpose compost. I get 4 x 60ltr bags for a tenner. It's quite peaty although does have some lumps and twiggy bits in it (similar to peat). I always sieve it and add various other bits depending on what I'm growing.

Verve Peat free.  £5 for 60l   (didnt buy the 3 for 2 offer) Seems good, even and fibrous, Possibly composted bark ??

Westland John Innes-  Seed, No 1 and No 2.    3 bags x 30 l for £12 at Scatts.

Quite dense soil-based. Traces of peat and sand in it.  I got good results last year which I why I have bought again this year.  But felt it was a little too dense and it formed a crust over my seeds, so I will mix in some Verve to fluff it up a bit this year.

Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

picked up 6 bags today of B+Q - Verve Multipurpose Compost (125L)  for £12. The bags had split and been taped up, the lad was selling them off @£2 per bag. Castleford store, might be a national thing you never know until you ask. :)

Miracle Grow seed & Cutting compost: was a bit unsure as it has added nutrients and generally speaking I prefer something less rich for sowing. Slightly on the coarse side for very small seeds to be sown directly, but onions are up and sweetpeas are thriving. Chillis are just fine too.

Aldi's seed compost: much finer and will use this for celery and celeriac.

(Also bought a sieve just in case   )

Levington f2 seed compost opened tonight and sowed some greyhound and lettice and it is just simply the best.

Only have to look at it to see the quality nice and fluffy and no big lumps so far.

My son had to stick his hand in it and said "WOW" smiled and walked away  :)

These days I only buy Westlands with added John Innes, this has always been the most consistent in quality that I have come across.
I am yet to find any twigs, plastic, wires or paint chips in it (like I have in other brands like miraclergrow, wilkinson's own brand and the rubbish poundland sells).
It is a good dark rich peat free compost with a nice sweet'ish earthy smell, holds moisture very well and produces excellent strong healthy looking seedlings.
I have been using it for at least the last 5 years give or take and will not use anything else I highly recommend it!
