I'm sure I read somewhere that it might be possible to obtain a second crop of broad beans from the lower portion of the 'haulms' is left in the ground after the initial crop has been harvested.

Anyone any ideas about this?

We tried it last year and it was definitely NOT successful. 
This year I've done successive sowings so as to prolong the season, but expect that:
1. They'll all be ready at the same time
2. The blackfly will have the lot
3. The weather will scupper any crop

Not that I'm pessimistic or anything

Ours were covered by snow and battered by the winds then drowned by the heavy rains, but a suprisingly bountifull crop that is slowly turning to stone in our freezer.

So it's out with the haulms and in with leeks I think.
