I was tempted by a pack of Huckleberry seeds in the garden centre yesterday. Says they are delicious. Anyone tried them out?? I will put them in a tub as the fruit look like nightshade.... don't want to confuse the nippers.

If I recall correctly, they are part of the nightshade family, often growing wild in the fields. Seed used to be commonly available here, but now you're hard pressed to find any. The fruit resembles blueberries but I understand they're a bit more blah but edible. As for 'delicious', I guess it depends whose opinion you're getting. Personally, I'd invest in blueberries, a bag of powdered sulphur and some netting.

hello drdave
i tried these last year. extremely easy to grow. 5 plants  took up an area
8foot by 8foot. plants reached about 5 foot tall. bugs of any description have no effect on them.
very prolific in their berry production. birds took no notice of them whatsoever. once tried never forgotten. they taste absolutely horrible even when made into jam or pies do your self a favour and steer clear

I grew 6 huckleberry plants on my allotment last season 2008.  Planted in late spring they were ready in November.  Made two small pots of the most delicious jam that had an 'acid' violet colour almost like a highlighter colour!  Ate loads one night on four teacakes with butter and the next day it turned my urine blue!

Best eaten after the frosts have got to them as they turn very, very sweet.  Great as an early winter fruit.  i can't fault them - jam was delicious!  Never thought I would be jam making in November!
