what shops do people use
« on: March 31, 2015, 13:12 »
Just wondered what suppliers people are using for the likes of compost/fertilizers etc.
When the sun shines i dig,
When rain pours i dig
When the wind blows---I SURF.

For compost I go to Been&Queued for Verve, my local garden centre for Miracle-Gro with the added water-retaining gel and long-lasting feed to use in my flower pots, and Wilko's for fertilizers such as bonemeal and chicken manure pellets.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

We're lucky enough to have a well stocked shed at the plots which sells pretty much everything you need cheaper than garden centres. The main exception being that I buy the big 125l bags of mpc from B&Q.

Seeds are via our allotment committee (Kings Seeds) and a few from eBay.

I waste much of the limited power of my poor little orang-utan brain by carrying around a rough idea of prices of the gardening essentials from shop to shop in my head, so I usually know if I've dropped on a special offer that really is actually special.

Dried fertilisers and composts are favourite candidates for BOGOF's and the '50% extra FREE' types of offer, but you still need to work out how much you are actually paying per kilo or litre, because they don't go out of their way to make that too easy for you to work out!  ::)

Wilco's can be very competitive, and will even deliver the goods (FOC) to the branch of your choice to pick up if that is more convenient, but you still need to do the maths first.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I get horse manure from the stables where I ride. It's well rotted and free! I get topsoil, bagged leaf compost and sand from the feed store. The bagged compost is made from the countywide leaf collection in the Fall.

I don't drive, so my bulk MPC compost I have delivered from
https://www.creativegardenideas.co.uk/

Everything else comes from either Wilko or Wyevale, which I can get the bus to  :D

I get used mushroom compost from the John Lewis/Waitrose garden centre near Stockbridge.

Have look around and see if you can get a split bag for less. I got 3 x 40 litre bags that were on offer for 3 for £12, the bags were split and taped, so were reduced to £1.50 each ;)   That was at y local B&Q.

Compost I get from the local garden centre (Squires - Badshot Lea), the own brand multi-purpose is good and always on £15 for 3 75l bags.  That's just under 7p per litre, a little more than B&Q Verve, but more convenient for me to get to.  I did experiment with some much more expensive composts from a local nursery for a few years but I didn't find any advantage.

Fertilisers I normally get from the Organic Gardening Catalogue. Their organic all purpose fertiliser is blood, bone, hoof, horn and a few other things (basically FBB without the fish).  The great thing I have found about it is that the local foxes aren't as attracted to it as normal FBB!

I have used B@M and Aldi's compost this year at only £2 or 3 per 50ltr, I probably would only use B@M's for the bases of pots as it is quite twiggy but so far Aldi's is working out quite well for sowing and potting on
I would normally use B&Q for their verve but have felt Aldi's is good enough to do what I need
Fertilisers I get the big 10kg tubs of chicken manure and bfb from dobbies at their end of season sale at 2 for £20
