Tesco's bargins - do you think they'll survive?
« on: September 25, 2006, 20:29 »
so i went into tesco for a red onion..........

and came out with a red onion AND and raspberry plant AND a blueberry plant.

they are both very small and i have tucked them in my make shift "greenhouse" (metal frame with plastic awning type thing).

but how can i get them though the winter?  i could try and convince mum to let me keep them in the porch.... not sure she'll agree...

but for £2.25 each i'm not too worried but i would like to give them a fighting chance.

also do i need to repot them?  they are in medium ish size pots at the mo

Give them a shot for sure, you never know  :D

I bought some small blueberry plants earlier this year (not from Tesco though) and was advised to plant them up in bigger pots with ericacious compost (blueberries like an acid soil). If your plants are rootbound in their pots, it'll be better it re-pot. Mind you I haven't re-potted mine yet as was too obsessed about my tomato plants above all else. Despite the mistreatment, my blueberry plants still look OK but will definitely need to sort them out soon. I wish you luck.

All I know is that blueberries need acid compost. They should be OK out in the open sheltered from the wind. If it gets very cold you could put some fleece over them.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

well i think my mini greenhouse shall be staying up this winter just to be safe.

must water them tomorrow - goodness knows how long they had been sitting on the shelf at tesco but they looked very dry.  i was going to do it when i got home but then i would have been watered myself in the process with all that rain!!

Blueberry plants originally come from very cold (read: snowy many months of the winter) climates and I remember us having raspberry canes popping up everywhere like weeds back in New Hampshire, USA so I suspect they're hardy too. I recently read that autumn planting is better than spring... the ground is warm, you still have fairly good light for a few more weeks and mild enough weather to let plants get established, compared to spring when the ground is cold, wet and the conditions can still go quite harsh.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

i wasn't too worried about the moment it was just as we get into the depths of winter a little more,  and it gets colder.
