Problem with hispi cabbage
« on: July 20, 2014, 19:35 »
Hello all,

Could I request some knowledge from the more experienced members of the group please?

I have noticed damage on my hispi cabbage as you can hopefully see in the photo.

Can anyone tell me what could be the cause?

Many thanks.

they're splitting because they needed to be picked before now.
When did you sow them?
They grow really quickly and are ready to eat in June from a March sowing ;)

Thanks very much.

I assumed it was the black stuff causing the splitting rather than the other way round.  Do you have any idea what the black stuff may be?  It may not be clear from the picture, but it is in a herring bone pattern.

Regards

It's rot from the wet getting in when the cabbage splits open  ;)

It's where animals have been nibbling, plus the elements, causing bits of the leaves to  start going off.  When you peel off  those bifs you should have a fab cabbage underneath

Sow hispi little and often to avoid gluts. ! They can be sown all year round practically.  I love them as they are so quick from sowing to harvest, and so tasty, quite sweet in fact

I have got Hispi on the menu for tomorrow's dinner with me sausages

Incidentally, Hitman you can nick leaves off your cabbages if you don't want to eat the whole thing. Handy if you want some for a stir fry

You know that you can freeze cabbage same as any other vegetable? 90 seconds blanching. It means that if everything comes at once you do get to keep some of them.
