cold weather and sweetcorn
« on: August 19, 2014, 20:09 »
Some of my sweetcorn are just starting to ripen (tassels turning brown) other have tassels but not turning yet. Now the weather has turn almost autumnal will this be a problem to the ripening process?

My first year growing and I'm impressed with what I appear to have so far, if they turn out to be Ok when I harvest them.

Cold conditions certainly don't help the ripening process, but shouldn't stop it altogether - I picked my first 3 on Sunday even though I knew they could have done with a bit longer (sweetcorn-loving friends!)

If it's as dry where you are as it is here don't neglect the watering just because it feels a bit autumnal at the moment.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Wow! I hope not. We have had some cold nights of late, so I'm going to check.
But they're a bit on the big size to try and cover with fleece.

Hi

I know the tassels are supposed to be brown but could someone give me a photo of what state the tassel should look like on mine I think they are done, I know you can test them by peeling back and testing the cob but have to admit I am horrified of earwigs  and would rather not until I have too

Hope you enjoy your corn. I can't believe mine has just about run it's course already, a full month earlier than last year.... just the secondary smaller cobs left now, and quite extraordinary that second flush has  pollinated so well considering the lack of pollen around, with the male tassles well and truly finished. I do have a neighbour 50 metres away windward, who has a later crop, so maybe that's helped.
It's been a great delicious crop, lots in the freezer as well, and I really will make sure next year I leave a proper 4 weeks between my two sowings to extend the fresh season. I should have more confidence in these modern varieties that they will ripen and produce no matter what the English Summer may throw at them. These days sweet corn must be one of the most dependable crops we can grow.
For anyone that might have had a frost worry this last couple of days, even throwing some enviromesh over the top of the crop would probably be enough to see off an August frost. No worries of that nature down here.
