who loved the cold weather?
« on: April 03, 2013, 22:33 »
Sprouting Broccoli!

I get green fly on them almost every year previously!

but not this year!

none whatsoever!

just pick and boil/steam, no need the usual salty water soaking and washing!

I got lots of caterpillars towards end of last season, my plot neighbor pulled them up, but I kept most of my 16 plants.

it turned out a winning choice!
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

Aren't you the lucky one!
In our house it was the dog who loved it most - and me when inside and enjoying the new woodburner!

Outside, the hens didn't seem to mind and the greenhouse just kept frost-free, so the strawbs didn't die. ;)

I do like the cold but this  year it seems to last forever.

Your lucky picking your PSB we are still waiting for ours.

PSB is the bees knees and very expensive in the shops, more so than asparagus so it's worth growing. Delicious and very versatile. Well done you, you must be very smug about your crop. Some folks grow stuff and then never care for it or harvest it, let alone cook it.  Sad but true  :nowink:

Cold weather is good for splitting our garlic cloves and shallots, killing off bugs and pests (we hope) and breaking down clumpy soil and manure. So it's not all bad news  :)

Towards the end of last year after all the wet weather, the big hope was for a harsh winter to do in some of these enormous slugs weall seemed to be inundated with.

I'd hope that one of the advantages of our extended winter is that the little blighters are at least reduced in numbers.

The pigeons have had all our PSB, the snow battered the nets down and they have eaten all the flowers.

The overwintered spring cabbages have also mainly gone... on the bright side, the garlic is looking well  :)

I don't mind the cold although it's a bit of a bore putting on all the layers! However, I wish we could restrict the cold to winter - strongly object when it continues for so long.  :(

I commute to work on a motorbike everyday, so I'm not liking having freezing limbs every day.

But I don't mind the cold to the lotty. I just put a hoody on and a Woolley hat and I'm away.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Cool weather is when I get any digging and all my weeding done, same with any transplanting and pruning. Bugs aren't out yet to pester me, I don't get heated up from the work, and rain usually follows to settle in plants. Perfect.  ;)

This cold weather plays havoc with the arthritis in my legs. I really want to get out there and get on with the digging and planting. Wouldn't be so bad if the cold winds would go away.

I do not want to jinx it, but the weather in Pembrokeshire has been great for the last 2 weeks, glorious sunshine hardly any wind which for Pembrokeshire is unheard of! Still not the best temps climbing to around 10ish degrees maybe upeot 14 at times but it still feels cold, more like a lovely autumn day than spring. Still it is moving in the right direction so long may it continue!

I do like winter and the cold, used to love the snow but again here it is very rare we see any, not seen more than the lightest of scattering this winter, we do not tend to get many frosts either which is great I hate defrosting the car in a morning, that job really is the pits!
