Onions in containers
« on: October 11, 2016, 19:44 »
Does anyone know if it is possible to grow onions in containers.
We have white rot at the plot, but I do have a couple of green recycling boxes going spare. I grew carrots in one this year, which worked quite well.
So would they be suitable for onion sets. and if so how close could I plant them?

Cheers
Elaine

Onions are fine in containers , they like a nice warm pot.
How close you plant them depends on what size you want your onions, more smaller or fewer bigger.

Best single in a 2 gallon bucket went 2lb 9oz this year! :)

Due to ordering a Kilo of onion sets in the spring instead of a pound, i found myself with a couple of dozen left over after planting out and no spare space, so i filled some plastic troughs with compost and manure and planted them and dotted them around the garden. They were ready for harvest 2 weeks before the ones in the ground and were of a good usable size.
I have now planted over wintering sets in troughs so will see how they do.

I think this sounds like a great idea, and if space is at a premium, then why not use the sort of spud bags or similar.

We only grow carrots this way, and they're exactly what we want, so I'd go for it, if there's no room elsewhere!

Thank you for all your replies. I am now claiming all the spare boxes!

Hadn't thought about garlic so I will see if there are any in the shops tomorrow.

8doubles I am only looking for onions for cooking, no championship plans here. But you say a warm pot, so would they be better in the (unheated) greenhouse for the winter? I do know that garlic needs the cold.

Growster I wish I had put more carrots in now, I think I will end up with a row of recycling boxes in the garden next year!

Cheers

Yes  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The onions will not grow much in the winter and cold soil around the roots will not improve the situation.
Trouble is with a cold greenhouse is the temperature fluctuation , a sunny day pushes the heat up to summer levels only to fall a few hours later to near frost levels.
Not many plants will like that.
Onions in my experiance do not fare well in greenhouses.
IMO its either sow onion seed Boxing day or buy sets in the spring .

Yes it can. Juts plant the cloves so that there is about an inch of compost over the top and remember to feed them in the Spring

A good amount of blood, fish and bone mixed throughout the pot will be fine.
I sometimes give them a feed of tomato fertiliser if there is some left in the watering can.
