Day Lily "Sandy Denny"
« on: October 30, 2012, 20:28 »
Just been browsing another site about the singer Sandy Denny and who had a flower named after her.   http://sandydenny.blogspot.co.uk/

“Sandy Denny” is a variety of daylily (hemerocallis) hybridized by Ludlow Lambertson in 1998, but apparently unavailable in the UK.  Can anyone help tracking down this flower please?

Personally, its not my sort of plant at all, but I like a good challenge to try to solve!
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Sandy Denny hybridized by Ludlow Lambertson in 1998 this is their website. They are sold out of Sandy Denny but you may be able to order for Spring 2014. They do ship worldwide, more info can be found on their following web page.

Good luck!

If at first you don't succeed, try a different method.

Thanks bainsk8.

You are correct that it isn't available from artgallery gardens. I was just wondering if there were any specialised bulb suppliers in the UK or even Europe that readers of this forum might know of  that might already have imported them.

Or even that someone on this forum that grow them.

I might try browsing some Dutch websites. They are supposed to be quite good with bulbs, I believe.  Not that I can speak Dutch!

Ik spreek bajia Nederlands, ik woont in Den Haag for negen jaar. I speak a little Dutch as I lived in Den Haag for 9 years.

I have already done .nl Google search and checked the bulb specialists for you in Holland, Canada, Australia, USA, UK and Germany.

I did find a couple who live in Washington, PA, who have it in their collection. I have emailed them on your behalf and am still waiting for a reply. Hart's Daylilies

I also found another place in Canada but the image didn't resemble 'Sandy Denny' in the slightest, there were also concerns to this supplier on some of the Daylily/Hemerocallis sections of plant/gardening forums.

It may pay to email Ludlow Lambertson as they maybe able to tell you of someone in the UK who they have supplied too.

I had a bit of spare time yesterday and as I had not known much about Daylilies I thought I would do a bit of searching for you. It was quite an educational one and interesting. I had no idea of the vast variations there were/are available. It also seems quite a popular and serious hobby to have, collecting and the hybridisation of Daylilies. Like you, with what you said in your first post "its not normally your thing". That said I can understand why people grow these, some of the Daylily photo's I saw are absolutely stunning and very striking. I have to admit I am tempted to have a go at growing some myself.

Edit: I also have a confession, I did not know who Sandy Denny was, obviously that was yesterday, today I know perfectly well that Sandy Denny was a talented singer/songwriter. I spent a bit of time late last night listening to her music while I searched for her Daylily.

I plan to read a bit more about Sandy Denny, from the little I did read it seems her life was a troubled and very interesting one.

Coincidently I stumbled across 4 video's of Fairport Convention Live on Ainsdale Beach nr Southport in June 1971. The violin is my faviote intrument and Dave Swarbrick plays in very well, it works very well with rock. I especially like "The Journeyman's Grace" played in part 4 of the vids. I might just have to play it again.  ;)

I am well acquainted with Sandy Denny (the vocalist), but had no idea a Daylily was named after her. Anyhow, with the lack of a current sourse/supplier for the plant with her namesake. here's one of Sandy's great performances with the band Fairport Convention of which she was once a member.,

Wow, that's fantastic bainsk8. Thanks for your help.

My surfing turned up the World's biggest lily exhibition at the Keukenhof in May next year. http://www.keukenhof.nl

I think this will be a good excuse for me  to visit the fantastic Keukenhoff again (for the third time)

I hadn't realised that the Sandy Denny lilly was created in the USA, so my Dutch idea is a shot in the dark.  Except that Sandy Denny once had a big following in the Netherlands and a leading website in her memory was created by a Dutchman during the years when she was almost forgotten.  So adding the Dutch love of bulbs to the fact that she was once  popular in the Netherlands might be in with a chance.

My quest is really about the fun of Plant Hunting, rather than wanting to grow this particular variety.
