Sad little hen. Pic added.
« on: October 16, 2012, 13:38 »
I went to the local poultry market today. I'm usually pretty good and don't buy anything but not this time!
I saw this little hen, she was described as black and white (that's all). She looks a lot like a silkie cross to me with very interesting colouring.
Anyway she is in a sorry state, some feathers missing and lot's of bloodied areas where she has been pecked at. Apart from the ol' purple spray is there anything I can do for her to help her recover quickly?
I've put her in a rabbit hutch with lot's of bedding, fresh water and pellets. I'll take a pic of her later so you can have a guess at what breed mix she might be.

Here she is, cute little thing too...

Sounds like she has had a hard time of it & lucky to have found you!

Does she appear OK apart from where she has been pecked?

Thank you. Yes she seems healthy enough just very frightened. Keeping her on her own for a while to let her heal and make sure she doesn't have any hidden nasties though.

If you don't know how old she is would she be better on growers or even chick crumb?

I pureed carrot, garlic, with a little honey and water for my broody and she loved it.  You can use cornflour instead of wound powder if needed (tip from Joyfull).

Looking forward to the photos.   :)

She's lovely, I thought maybe light sussex x silkie? You could give her a bit of fish flavour cat food for extra protein while she's re-feathering. Hope she settles in ok.

Sooooo, while I was in the kitchen  my darling??? kiddies opened up the hutch the little hen was in. When I went out there she was in the main run (the run was open so the girls could free range a bit) eating from the feeder with Ethel (my Faverolles hen). Those two have been pecking around together since. I'm wondering if she will take herself off to bed with the others when the light fades?

Yes she did. I can't believe none of the others were bothered by her intruding their space either!  I've left her to get on with it now that she has moved herself in.

Been thinking the same thing.  :(
Thing is she and the others seem happy, seems she wanted some company. She is also healing very well and doesn't look too out of place with the moulting girls.
She seems healthy enough, I've had a good look at her. I'm just wondering if her reason for being at the market was down to either being bullied by the rest of her old flock or being the cockerels favorite hen?
