I use quite thick branches from trees. They are strong and look the part because they are natural :wink:

A broom handle would be handy for bantams but probably not for larger chickens.
Having said that, my birds are quite happy to roost on the thinest of branches when they take to the trees.

It's only a problem for them I think when the have to sit on thin sticks all the time - gives them foot problems  :(
