Spinach failure..
« on: September 28, 2012, 19:51 »
The year before last I chucked a bit of spinach in the ground but it just withered away.  Last year I had better luck, some of the baby leaf bolted and went to seed nut I grew loads ofe beaytiful leaf beet spinach.  This year has been pathetic again.  I'm gutted as I was really looking forward to having loads of nice spinach.  Has anybody else experienced anything similar?

I find it much easier to grow spinach beet rather than spinach, and to me tastes just as good.  I'm no expert though.  My spinach bolted immediately.

I have only got some to germinate in the last few weeks. Not had any luck all year from earlier sowings.  I've sown Bordeaux and Rico D'Asti and it's up at last  :)

outside spinach took time to start, but the polytunnel stuff is great. outside got better when sheltered.

I germinate in the greenhouse and then plant seedlings outside. 100% germination, 100% failure of young plants this year. I put it down to the continuous downpours

I planted in modules on a sunny windowsill back in July and planted out mid August - 100% germination, 10% bolted and the rest are doing lovely - had my first picking last weekend.

Maybe I should have tried a later batch as well then although last year it was glorious by the end of July and I was picking it til the end of Octoer.  Can't tell if I've just been unlucky with my seeds, the ground or whether it's the weather we've had.  Having said that, last year's weather wasn't much to write home about either as I recall it..
