I have a load of pumkins and assorted winter squash growing. When would people normally harvest? Is there a set date or do I wait unit first frost or until the foliage dies back? I dont want to wait too long as I have heard if they get too cold it can effect how well they keep.

It was down to 6C here last night so I don't think we've got much longer before there is another one (we already had one at the end of August )

I'll be putting some fleece over mine soon as I have a big one that's not ripe yet, and don't want it to be spoiled.

If they have already changed colour, which means they're ripe, I'd cut them with big stem handles now.

If they have already changed colour, which means they're ripe, I'd cut them with big stem handles now.

Some of mine started yellow and are still yellow. I cannot remember which type they are. One of the old boys on the site said if you tap them they have a different sound if they are ripe - is this true?

I don't know about tapping them, but the skin does go harder
