Tulameen Raspberries out of sync
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:29 »
Hi Everyone,

A few weeks ago I ordered some cheap discounted Tulameen Raspberries.

They arrived sealed in bags with one stem each of last years growth. As I understand it these are a Primocane variety and fruit would/should have appeared on this growth. As these cane are discounted end of season stock the canes have been suffocated in plastic bags all season and have not been allowed to grow. By now there should be a new cane of this seasons growth and I should be cutting off last years'.

I'm looking for advice - what should I do with these canes? Cut last year's growth down and hope new canes develop next year? Or will nothing come back? Will I not get raspberries next year?

At the moment I've put the canes into a bucket of water and some new shoots are growing on the canes.

Thanks

Mattx

I did exactly the same last year.  The fact that you have new shoots growing means that they want to grow.  Mine were the same, I planted mine and got some fruit off the original canes this year.  Now I have loads of lovely new canes coming for next year.

Just plant them.  You might not get much fruit next year, but you will the year after.
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

Plant them now and cut the existing stem's down next spring. The new growth next year will bring forth the fruit. Put a handful of bonemeal in the planting hole, they will enjoy it.

According to Blackmoor fruit nursery, they are summer fruiting
http://www.blackmoor.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=442

Any growth from the roots now and through next year, will be the ones they fruit on the year after.

I'd leave the 1 cane you have as it may just fruit next year, if it doesn't show any regrowth on the stem in the spring then cut it down to the ground - but that'll probably mean that you will not get any fruit next year :(

Yes they are summer fruiters.

I have Tulameen and they grow huge  The new growth (which will fruit around mid June) is about 2.3m tall and there are masses of stems too.

Let it grow, as you will get no fruit next year otherwise

Tulameen raspberries are not a Primocane type.
They are summer fruiting variety, they are late summer fruiting but still a summer fruiting variety.

Suggest you plant them now, water and feed and allow any canes to grow, these will (should) give a little fruit next year. Not a lot I suspect however.

Next years growth will supply fruit the following year. You are going to have the get used to identifying new (first year), second year and old canes and so prune out the canes that are over 2 years old.
