Would a 6x4 ft shed accommodate 10 silkies? What size nesting area would be needed? Do they need a seperate sleeping area? The size of the run is also baffling me!!!
The red ants nest i found yesterday is where i was hoping to put my chickens but thanks, got that little problem sorted.
need all the help i can get and not just with my allotment

size of the run should be as big as possible, especially if you are planning it to be permanent (rather than movable)

yes it would fit them nicly .raised off the floor  a few inches  with wire around the base/// 14 inch nest boxes .6   ,the run can be 10ft by 10ft  by 6ft high with the shed inside it . or 12 by 4ft x 6ft.with a roof . corregated plastic sheets come in 12 ft   slope the plastic away to the front 4ft section .have a gutter to use the water in the garden , make the door 32 inch wide .( barrow width   ) and as high as you like  have hanging feeders on the walls etc and drinkers  this will help keep vermin away    :D
still alive /............

isn't a 10 by 10 foot run a bit small for 10 hens?

ours is 9 by 19 foot and we only have two hens (though i want to get another couple soon)

very showery here today but it rained constantly yesterday so i'm happy with showers

if you have the space i'd really go with a bigger run; ours is so big that i've been able to put up temporary fencing (just green net) so that the grass can recover in those parts - then i will remove them in a few weeks and the hens can have nice fresh grass to scratch in!!

our run is permanent (we'd soo much trouble getting the fencing posts into our stony soil) so we decided to make it bigger - i think it gives the hens a bit of variety and stimulation

i had 12 marans in a shed that size with a confinement run of 10x 10 and they did fine .. the coop is only for sleeping   i reckon being silkies they are only small anyways and fine for that area 100 sq feet / 10 birds = 90sq ft left

but don't forget to subtract the area of the shed too if it's inside the fence-which would be 24 sq foot
