growing asparagus in lancashire?
« on: September 08, 2012, 17:40 »
I have a long south facing stone wall bordering my veg plot.  I was wondering about building a raised bed against it for asparagus but my husband said he didn't know if asparagus would do well in Lancashire.

Anyone with experience of growing it?  Will it survive?

I haven't even opened DD's link, but saw its title. People grow it round here. Have fun! :D

When I used to live in Liverpool, there were huge fields of it grown not far away near Ormskirk in Lancashire.

Don't know where abouts you are in Lancashire, but I still think its grown there.

Lots of nice asparagus on my site in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I'm sure you'll be fine 'down south' where you are :)

Only real "must-have" for asparagus is good drainage (you merely need plenty of patience!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Don't know what your soil is like, but a raised bed is ideal as you can guarantee the good drainage it needs. I have a bed and had our first harvest this year. Just one thing - a stone wall may help to give the bed some warmth and protect the ferns from any winds, but will hide lots of slugs and snails, so be on the look-out as they love asparagus!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Growing great on my plot in sunny Wirral! Only advice I would give is to invest in quality crowns from a good source. Getting mine from Aldi a couple of years ago got one plant out of four crowns!

Or you could grow your own from seed. It obviously takes longer but if you're growing asparagus you're in it for the long haul anyway. I used about half a packet of seeds and got about thirty young plants from it.
