Muddy Chicken Run.....HELP !
« on: August 30, 2012, 07:16 »
We live in Florida and with all the rain recently our run has been under water frequently and now we have anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of just mud.  We thought about throwing hay or maybe cat litter into the area to absorb some of the water but didn't know if it would help or hurt.  We welcome any suggestions anyone has.  Our run is 8x10' and completely fenced in.  Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome, a lot of us over here will sympathise with your situation as we too have had lots of rain. Is it possible to put a cover over the top of your run to stop this happening again in the future?

But for your problem now - I would try and scoop a lot of the mud out of the run and dispose of it - mud when mixed with chicken pooh can be very smelly. Then get some bedding (not straw or hay) and spread it around - something like horse bedding or dust extracted shavings.
Can you also get some powdered disinfectant that is poultry friendly to sprinkle around - we use Stalosan F.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I sorted the same problem by roofing 3/4 of the roof with perspex and putting down sand in the run.  New sand does need adding from time to time - but my life is so much easier - gone are muddy hens feelt & wellies for me

You could try putting a few pallets on top of it till things dry up a bit.  :)  At least they would have something drier to stand on for now.

If it is under water, then perhaps you need to make the area higher.  I would add some woodchippings to increase the height and allow more free drainage.  If you can, then put a cover over the run to stop all the rain getting in.  Stalosan F will help with any smell, as mentioned before wet chicken poo is stinky.  The pallet idea is great and will give a higher area for the chooks.  Hope that helps.
