If the Temp. drops to 23 degrees, would a 250 watt bulb be fine for 4 chooks?  Is there a rule of thumb? yf Betty   And why is a red light a good idea?  Is it for sleeping purpose?

Hello betty.

I imagine a 250W infra-red bulb would be fine - a bit like having a small electric fire on.

Infra-red = heat, so you definitely want a 'heat bulb' rather than a 'light bulb,' which would be blindingly bright at 250W and not provide much warmth! (or opportunity for sleep)

Chick brooders usually have such a bulb because it radiates warmth + a little light, and the chicks can move closer under it/further out as they feel cold/hot.

i reckon half the wattage  would do about a 100 watt heat bulb ,we use them on lamb pens and they do great .to much heat in a cold area will probably lead to moisture in the coop and possibly even colds .  big coop wil take psipowers to heat it tho .put on a roof truss
still alive /............

We had the 250W infra reds when the chicks were small, but for the past 2 weeks I've just had a 60 watt fireglow bulb in their shed as they seem to be frightened of the dark!  But it is very warm in their shed because they all snuggle up close together at night still
