Are these all the basics to I need to start??
« on: August 28, 2012, 19:10 »
Got shed, chick run. Would I be right in assuming the following are the other basic things I still need? Feeder, drinker, chickens, bedding, food & grit?  Any other advice would be appreciated.

                   Cheers.

Don't forget tools to clean out shed.  I clean my shed daily when I collect eggs and find it works really well and takes just a few seconds, and keeps everywhere looking good and pleasent to go into.

A big, comfy bench / garden chair  ::) its amazing how much time you will waste spend just watching them.

also, and you may never need them but check out it your local vets are poultry friendly or find one that is. Its better to find them out before you need them in an emergency.

also check out local suppliers and what products they stock. you could go out and spend a small fortune on products that you may never use / need but its good to know somewhere in those times of need

i would probably start with apple cider vinegar, garlic and diatom powder at the very least.

They will need shelter from rain/ sun and you it's useful to have  basic medicines and a first aid kit.

Purple spray to treat and disguise wounds
Wound powder
Anti peck spray
Vaseline

There are other products people keep in stock eg. Preparation H for treating prolapse but perhaps stick to the basics for now.
You will also need to provide oyster shell to replenish calcium stores.
Very Important to find a chicken friendly vet in your area.

I'm sure others will add to this list. Good luck and enjoy.

Also oyster shell put this in a seperate pot and they will take what they need, this helps with strong eggs and the grit you mentioned will help to break down their food!  Don't forget to post pictures when you get them  :D

Hope you haven't decided its easier to just buy the eggs!

If you can find an Omlet course (usually Sat am for £20) they are great fun and you'll learn a lot.
