advice needed about farm
« on: August 20, 2012, 23:58 »
I have been looking for some silkies ... My mum and dad have driven around and found another farm than the one I have used in the past ... We went there this morning it was so clean only one in quarantine on own as had a cough ... It was free to good home as cockerel the man said it had been on meds ... I can't take as have neighbors so we left and went to farm I have used in past and left very soon after getting there as there was sick chicks not very old head down tail down wings on floor ... The birds had either no water or was dirty ... Went around side of farm to duck area and was upset at a duckling mouth breathing heavily the coup was sodden and smelt awful ... Turned around and in anther run there was a lot of ducklings I bent down to look at them and around 5 had extremely swollen cheeks eyes half closed no food or water ... Being so upset left mum and went to car ... Is there any one that I could get to look at birds and all the animals that are there ?? I can't get the pics outta of my head and feeling that I have just walked away from something that could be so sick without trying to help

Report them to DEFRA.  Just google it and it should give you a contact number.

It was so sad to see ... If anyone goes to buy any who don't know what to look for and think that they are meant to look the way they do then the poor animals could spread what ever it is wrong with them and suffer even longer without treatment ... There was a lot of animals there and housing was so over crowded and dirty ... Gonna attempt to go back to farm weekend if I can and see if any changes if not then will find someone else to complain to or even get courage and tackle them myself lol xx

Yacks - please be very careful before your tackle them yourself - if they keep animals in the conditions that you describe they may not be very nice people and you could find yourself in trouble. As well as DEFRA as suggested by GrannieAnnie you could try the RSPCA.

The same applies to your mum - she would be better to let the experts deal with the situation just to be on the safe side.  :)

I agree with Springy.  Far better to leave this to the professionals.  If you or your mum suddenly starts taking photos, it is completely unpredictable how things will then pan out.  And as it's a farm, I imagine that you / she would be relatively exposed and isolated if the worst came to the worst.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Contact the RSPCA.  Do not go back and try and take photos yourself.
